Alameda Elementary Presents an Evening of Jazz with Tom Grant, Valerie Day, Tom Cheek and Dave Captein
01/12/2010
Alameda Elementary School, 2732 NE Fremont Street
Alameda Elementary School presents an Evening of Jazz with Tom Grant, Valerie Day, Tom Cheek and Dave Captein at Alameda Elementary School to benefit the general music program.
On January 12th, 2010 Alameda alumnus Tom Grant (piano) will join Valerie Day (vocals), Dave Captein (bass) and Tom Cheek (saxophone) to perform a concert at Alameda Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the general music program at Alameda, which is run by Tom Cheek. Tickets will be $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Limited seating is available for this special event.
Tom Grant, master instrumentalist, talented singer and natural entertainer nimbly walks the line between jazz tradition and modern pop. This soft-spoken Oregon native's inspired songwriting produces propulsive R&B grooves, infectious melodic hooks, and stylish ballads with equal ease. He plays jazz piano with the harmonic sophistication and deep sense of swing that only comes from more than three decades on the bandstand. At the same time, his recordings have consistently landed at the top of the Smooth Jazz charts, a genre of music Tom helped pioneer in the mid-80s.
Dynamic and self assured, Valerie Day has a voice that is evocative of another time, yet refreshingly modern. Gifted singer, skilled percussionist, in-demand session player and passionate advocate for arts education, Valerie is an artist of rare talent and dedication. First appearing on the world's stage in the 80's with the Pop/R&B band NU SHOOZ, she has since performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of artists ranging from the Oregon Symphony Pops to pianist Tom Grant, guitarist Dan Balmer, pianist Darrell Grant, celebrated jazz artist David Frishberg, and many others.
Tom Cheek is a veteran saxophonist, flutist, and clarinetist and is comfortable playing many different genres including Jazz, R&B, Latin, African and Classical. He has performed and/or recorded with many top national and local acts including the Temptations, the Four Tops, Lou Rawls, David Sandborn, NuShooz, Billy Rancher, Calvin Walker, Oregon Symphony, Manhattan Transfer and many others.
Dave Captein is a first call bass player in Portland with flawless technique and superior musicianship. Dave has played with Tom Grant for many years and is experienced at playing most any style of music. He has appeared with Wynton Marsalis, Mose Allison, Richie Cole, Tal Farlow, Ernestine Anderson, Jack Sheldon, Nu Shooz, Marlena Shaw, Frankie Avalon, Paul McCandless, Larry Coryell, Andy Narell, Jerry Hahn, Dave Frishberg, Randy Brecker, Jessica Williams (appearing on 10 of her CD's), Joey De Francesco, Eric Alexander, Pete Christlieb, Bud Shank, Jeff Lorber, Benny Green and local luminaries such as Ron Steen, Mel Brown, Dan Balmer, Gary Hobbs and Rebecca Kilgore.

Exhibition: Subjective
01/07/2010
North View Gallery, 12000 SW 49th Avenue
In portraiture, the relationship between artist and subject changes everything. In Subjective, everything is relative.
Portland artists Becca Bernstein and Gwenn Seemel have joined in a blind collaboration to show how portraiture is more than mere mimesis. In their newest exhibit, Subjective, their genre is presented as a living process that is personal to each artist. The paintings are a tangible result of the relationship between the subject and the artist.
Bernstein and Seemel have painted themselves and each other, as well as their parents, partners, and other relations. Subjective consists of two views each of ten subjects: twenty paintings of loved ones immortalized once by a stranger and once by their kin.
Daughter by Becca Bernstein, acrylic on wood, 36x36While portraiture is perhaps one of the most traditional art forms, Bernstein and Seemel's concept and methods are intended for a contemporary audience who expect more than just a pretty face from art.
Dr. Richard Brilliant, the widely published scholar and art historical authority on portraiture, is contributing the introductory essay for the upcoming exhibition catalog which will come out in March. The January exhibit at North View Gallery launches the 2010-2011 tour of Subjective to art centers throughout the Northwest.
Exhibition: Subjective, a blind collaboration between Becca Bernstein and Gwenn Seemel.
First show: North View Gallery, Portland Community College Sylvania Campus, 12000 SW 49th Avenue, Portland, OR 97219.
Open: 7 January through 5 February 2010.
Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Reception: 13 January 2010, 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

Ornament Making (for the birds) Activity
12/16/2009
Isobel's Clubhouse
Ms. Jean, who brought the cool Terrarium Project to Isobel's Clubhouse, is back with an ornament making activity.
We've seen a preview of one of the ornaments, and it's perfect for the weather we've been having. Children will cover nice fresh pine cones with peanut butter and seeds. The end product can be hung in trees, or from a balcony, to benefit our feathered friends the birds, who will be happy for a nice meal. Ms Jean is our neighbor, and also a Zimmerman Community Center board member. But to the children, she's a great teacher who helps them with fun projects.
This is a drop in event, and no RSVP is required. Children too young to do the activity are welcome to come and play with toys while the older children do a craft.
We recommend a donation of $2 - $5 for each child who participates in the ornament activity. This helps cover costs of materials, as well as other Clubhouse costs.
What should I bring?
Materials are provided. Because of the cost of materials we are recommending a donation of $2 - $5 for each child who participates.
