Reading Group
ADP Reading Group: Times vary @ CEMA
Goal: To familiarize yourself with a diverse range of ideas and styles in the form of weekly readings or activities that will challenge you to think critically, develop your analytical ability, and promote synthesis and reapplication of ideas and methods in your own research.
Format: Readings/activities are assigned each week. Typically one or more faculty members will have chosen it and will generally be present for the discussion. Each week, two students will be responsible for preparing the reading or contextualizing the activity for the rest of the group. This does not mean that they are the only ones to read or participate; everyone is responsible. Rather, it means that these students prepare a summary as well as some synthesis questions to present prior to discussion or immediately afterwards that the groups will respond to. Here are some forms that the synthesis questions could take:
--How can you adapt the tools, concepts, data, methods, or results from the reading to different fields and/or disciplines and/or your own work?
--What prospects does the reading stimulate for collaboration in teams or networks that seek to exchange and/or create tools, concepts, data, methods, or results across different fields and/or disciplines?
--What ideas might the reading have given you to engage research in domains
that sit at the intersection of or the edges of multiple fields and/or disciplines?
--How might you use the ideas from this reading to engage in topics that not only draw on multiple fields and/or disciplines but also serve multiple stakeholders and broader missions outside of academe?
Students will take time during class to respond to the question(s) and will post their responses on their blog by lunchtime/evening.
Students should keep a note/sketchbook in which they will keep notes, responses an observations made before the reading group. These may be periodically collected and will be required as part of the end-of-the-semester portfolio.
Grading: will be based on participation and level of engagement with the readings/activities. This includes blog entries as well as preparation/notebooks.

(Shreyas Karle, has been in Bangalore for 3 months, and has in a sense been appropriated by the "bar1" India -India residency program 2008, as a torchbearer that functions as a go-be tween for two batches of artist-guests. He received a Masters in visual arts from Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. His work uses absurdity as a metaphor to reflect social situations. It creates an ambience of humour but simultaneously mocks the ironies of reality. Most of the work involves the participation of an audience, that completes the experience of viewing the work. Apart from the visual pun, there is often an anchoring thought that mirrors mundane life. He feels that in the post visual world where imagery has been saturated, he is trying to experiment and re-establish the parameters of defining a visual. He lives and works between Bombay and Baroda. ).
