WEEK 1

When i came to class this morning this is what i thought the class would be about- Using sensors etc. to collect info. and building an interface for that info.

After reading the David Dunn article though i feel like its possible to look at this in another way- As a conversation. Data collection seems very unilateral. Youre not considering that the device that you put out can play an active part. Also the possibility of setting up your device in the expectation of an 'emergent property'is fascinating. Sending out a stimulus and recording its effect.

"Noise is more familiar to human nature than music"- Luigi Russolo,The Art of Noise. Just something to keep in mind. Pauline Oliveros talks about how we block out what we consider noise. This 'noise' can actually be a good indicator of changes in the environment if observed- Deep Listening must take you beyond boundaries we have cultivated. "General Motors is the conductor of our soundscape"- someone who wrote some article about Pauline Oliveras whose name i havent taken note of.

I wonder what the noise from Bandra-Worli Sealink is doing to the area around - life in the sea and on the coast.

And is it possible to use sensors to monitor toxins in food and how they get there?

WEEK 2

Readings ( from CSE and Gobar TImes) and discussion about Pollution. Who are the stake holders? Bureaucracy, Automobile Industry, Oil Industry, Civilians etc. Researching Bangalores Pollution levels as compared to WHO standards

WEEK 3

Arduino Building simple circuits and running LED programmes

The Knight Rider Programme that make LEDs run in sequence.

Built circuit for musical Instrument that uses LDRs

Week 4 : Speculative Products

Padushan Parandha Padushan Parandha ino ordinary truck ornament. Lots of trucks are decorated with parandhas but this parandha is hooked up to air quality sensors. The Parandha glows green when air pollution is at the tolerable standard. En route if the pollution level surges the parandha gets dull.

Sending Info. from sensors to Pachube

We looked through everyines ideas and chose 4 products to take forward. (Chimeaira, T shirt, lcd display, garland )

WEEK 5

I chose to work in the Chimaera Group
Image:Chimeaira.png
We took a fresh look at the concept. To figure out what we actually wanted to build.

WEEK 6

Came up with various prototypes to propel the chime with wind. It didnt really work. So we decided that we'd use a stepper motor to generate the sound. And use bells inside of chimes. For 2 reasons- bells are more indian, they generate a pleasant sound easily. Building circuit for Stepper Motor.

WEEK 7

Building the sheild for with the entire circuit- Power, Gas sensor, Stepper Motor et al. Prototyping the mechanism. Low Pollution: Bells are at periphery of the disc With rising Pollution the bells get constricted towards the centre and rise. Writting the Stepper Programme to wind according to readings from the gas sensor.

WEEK 8

Below: Using string winding . It pulled the bells to the centre but didnt generate enough sound
Image:Bellera_1.png

Below: Using metal wire( suspended through channels on the disc that was stiffer than the string) generated more sound
Image:Bellera_3.png

Mapping the readings of the gas sensor to match the distance that the rods travel through the channel.

WEEK9

The finishing touches. Paint and Fabric.

Personal tools
